Glengoyne began distilling, at least legally, in 1833 on what is now the border between the highlands and the lowlands of Scotland. Still to this day they distil there whisky in the highland and mature is across the road in the lowlands. This gives Glengoyne the unique position of choosing whether to be a Highland or Lowland malt, they went with Highland.
